Purple Haze Anise Hyssop makes good on its name with slim, smoky violet-blue spikes held in an open, airy arrangement above gray-green foliage. This live 4-inch plant of Agastache 'Purple Haze' carries a clear anise scent in the leaves — the giveaway that tells you it is an Agastache and not a salvia.

Upright stems reach a useful height for the middle of a sunny border, where the haze of small flowers softens anything stiff planted beside it. Bees and butterflies work the spikes for weeks, and the same stems cut well for loose, informal arrangements. Full sun deepens the violet and keeps the stems firm; sharp drainage and restraint with the fertilizer do the rest.

Fun fact: The genus name is Greek in origin — agan, very much, plus stachys, an ear of grain — which is as literal a description of a plant covered in flower spikes as botany has ever managed.
