Albus Cupflower runs a dense, ankle-flat carpet of small scalloped green leaves, then lifts sprays of tiny white two-lipped flowers, each lower lip freckled with restrained yellow, from May into August. It arrives as a live 4-inch plant.

Mazus reptans 'Albus' solves the awkward horizontal spaces: joints between pavers and stepping stones, the front lip of a rock garden, a pond margin, the bare soil under taller perennials. Slender stolons root as they travel, so it fills in fast and takes moderate foot traffic. It makes a fine skirt for spring bulbs, too — crocus and narcissus push up right through the mat.

Fun fact: Botanists have been rearranging this one. Kew now files Mazus reptans as a synonym of Mazus miquelii, though the garden world has cheerfully gone on calling it reptans.
