Dash Mixture Dianthus is a mix of sweet William in pinks and reds, each stem topped with a dense, flat cluster of small fringed flowers, often marked with a contrasting eye. It is the old-fashioned cottage-garden flower in a tidy form, a short-lived perennial that is often grown as an annual or biennial.

Sweet William makes a long-lasting cut flower, and a handful of stems fills a small vase; in the garden, bees and butterflies work the clusters. Plant it in a sunny border or cutting bed in well-drained soil that stays evenly moist; it handles a little light shade, and deadheading helps it keep flowering. Plant a few together for a stronger show, leaving a little space between them so air can move through the foliage.

Fun fact: Dianthus comes from the Greek for divine flower, joining dios and anthos.
