Growth Timeline

  • Growing Season: Most fruits/veggies have their peak growing season starting in spring and extending through fall. They need a runway of consecutive warm days and nights (from 60-90) to produce fruit.
  • First Harvest: Fruits/veggies take 2-3 months to bear fruit and/or reach ripeness.
  • Final Harvest: Fruits/veggies start to give out between late summer and early fall in most climates. Some plants, such as strawberries, will become dormant in winter before popping back into action in for spring, but most fruiting plants will need to be replaced after their season is over.

Growing Zone

Grows best in zones 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10.

Most fruits and veggies prefer warmer temperatures and will be dormant or grow very slowly in colder climates. Refer to the following guidelines concerning extreme weather:

COLD CLIMATES

  • Fruits/veggies require nighttime temperatures to consistently be in the 50s or above to survive.

WARM CLIMATES:

  • Fruits/veggies are made for the heat and will do fine with temperatures above 90 degrees.

To find out what extreme temperatures your location experiences, check out the USDA zone for your region.

More Fruit & Veggie Tips

Support Trailing Plants: Unless you are growing smaller plants (jalapeño or micro-tomatoes) you might want to use stakes, trellises, or cages to support the plants as they grow. This will prevent them from sprawling on the ground. Train the vines to grow vertically for better air circulation and easier harvesting.

Striped Armenian Cucumber (Cucumis melo var. flexuosus 'Striped Armenian', aka 'Painted Serpent') is a visually spectacular, heat-loving heirloom variety producing dramatically ribbed, slightly fuzzy, S-shaped fruits with striking alternating dark and light green stripes — fruits that can reach impressive lengths yet are best harvested at 12–15" for peak tenderness and sweetness. Technically a muskmelon grown and used as a cucumber, Striped Armenian is beloved for its extraordinary mild, refreshing flavor, paper-thin fully edible skin, and virtually seedless interior that requires no peeling and remains completely bitterness-free even at larger sizes.

Grown using 100% certified organic practices, Striped Armenian Cucumber arrives with a Professional Grade root system ready for transplanting into warm, full-sun garden beds, raised beds, or large trellised containers. This vigorous, fast-growing vine is exceptionally heat and drought tolerant compared to standard cucumber varieties, thriving through the hottest stretches of summer when other cucumbers stall or struggle. Its ornamental ribbed and striped fruits are as beautiful to display as they are delicious to eat, making it a prized specialty item at farmers markets, in CSA shares, and in restaurant kitchen gardens seeking distinctive, premium produce.

  • Exceptional Heat & Drought Tolerance — Unlike standard cucumbers, Striped Armenian thrives through intense summer heat and drier conditions, maintaining vigorous production through peak season when others fail.
  • No Peeling Required — Paper-thin, fully edible skin means zero prep time — simply rinse, slice, and serve for the freshest, most nutrient-complete eating experience direct from your garden.
  • Virtually Seedless & Never Bitter — Minimal seed cavity and naturally low cucurbitacin content ensure Striped Armenian remains sweet, mild, and completely bitterness-free at any harvest size throughout the season.
  • Ornamental & Market-Worthy Fruits — Dramatically ribbed, S-shaped, alternating dark and light green striped fruits are as visually spectacular as they are delicious — a standout at farmers markets, CSA boxes, and specialty kitchen gardens.
  • Certified Organic Heirloom Heritage — Grown from open-pollinated heirloom seed stock without synthetic inputs, preserving centuries of agricultural biodiversity in every plant delivered to your garden.

These 4" healthy live plants thrive in full sun (8+ hours daily) with deep, infrequent watering — allow soil to dry slightly between waterings and plant in well-draining, compost-rich organic soil after last frost when soil reaches 65°F. Provide a strong vertical trellis to keep the distinctive S-shaped fruits straight, clean, and easy to harvest; pick at 12–15" for peak flavor and tenderness. Days to maturity: approximately 60–70 days from transplant.

We take great care to ensure our seedlings are healthy and well-established before they’re shipped. We pre-germinate the organic seeds and grow them up to 12 weeks before shipping them as mature plants ready for transplant. Seedlings typically arrive within 1-4 days.
