Growing Zone

Champion Collard Greens grows best in zones 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10, but may do well outside that range as well.

Most leafy greens like the cooler temperatures, but they can generally grow year-round. You want to be aware of the extreme temperature ranges in your region. Refer to the guidelines below:

COLD CLIMATES

  • If you live in a location where the temperatures dip below freezing, hold off on growing until night temperatures are consistently in the 40's.
  • On the occasional dips into the 30's, you can cover your seedlings with a sheet overnight.

WARM CLIMATES:

  • If you regularly experience temperatures above 90 degrees for long periods of time, you may want to focus on herbs and heat-tolerant fruiting plants (tomatoes and peppers) during the heat intensive months.
  • Once temperatures are consistently in the 80's, you can start growing leafy greens.

To find out what extreme temperatures your location experiences, check out the USDA zone for your region.

About this plant

Champion Collard Greens arrive as a certified organic live 2-inch starter plant — an improved selection of the old Southern standby 'Vates', with broad, smooth blue-green leaves that lie open rather than curling in, and a flavor closer to mild cabbage than to kale.

It is a heavy, forgiving producer: pick the outer leaves and the center keeps pushing new ones for months. Give it full sun, rich soil and steady water, and expect full-size leaves around 70 to 75 days. Frost is not a problem — it is the point. A cold night converts starch to sugar, and the leaves come in noticeably sweeter afterward. Harvested leaves hold in the refrigerator for two weeks or more.

Fun fact: collards do not form a head at all. Their loose, open leaves stay much closer to wild Brassica oleracea than the tight-headed cabbages bred from the same species centuries later.

  • Sunlight: Full Sun (6+ hrs)
  • Water: Keep moist
  • Mature Size: 2'–4' tall
  • Harvest Season: Fall, Winter
  • Lifespan: Biennial
  • Hardiness Zones: 6–10
  • Resistance: Pest Resistant (General)
