Charred Kale Salad With Tahini Dressing

A Smoky Twist on Garden-Fresh Greens

There is nothing quite like the robust, earthy flavor of kale picked straight from your own backyard. When you use a seasonal garden kit to grow your own greens, you are harvesting peak nutrient density—specifically high levels of Vitamin K, A, and C—that begins to fade the moment store-bought produce hits the shelf. This charred kale salad takes those vibrant, homegrown leaves and adds a layer of smoky complexity through a quick sear, perfectly balanced by a creamy, mineral-rich tahini dressing. It’s a sophisticated way to enjoy the "fruits" of your labor from your seasonal garden kit.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp lime juice
  • 2 tbsp tahini
  • ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil (divided)
  • ½ cup cilantro, roughly chopped
  • ¼ tsp sea salt
  • 1 tbsp water
  • 4 cups kale leaves, stem removed and roughly torn
  • 2 tbsp toasted sesame seeds
  • 1 blood orange, peeled and roughly chopped
  • 2 tbsp pumpkin seeds, optional

Directions

  1. Add the lime juice, tahini, ¾ of the oil, cilantro, salt, and water in a blender or food processor. Blend until smooth and creamy so the sauce is a lovely pale green color.
  2. Heat a cast-iron or non-stick pan over medium heat. Once the pan is hot, add the remaining oil and half the kale. Let it cook undisturbed for about 1 minute. Continue cooking while tossing the kale around until it is lightly charred. Remove and repeat the process until all the kale is lightly charred.
  3. Add the kale to a plate and drizzle with the dressing, top with sesame seeds, orange segments, and pumpkin seeds. Enjoy!
