Tropical Light Well – A Lush Vertical Garden in Palo Alto, CA

In this project, we transformed a simple light well into a vibrant tropical retreat. What was once an underutilized architectural feature is now alive with color, texture, and movement. The vertical garden design softens the walls, brings in natural beauty, and creates a restorative space filled with tropical flair.

Design Concept: Our client wanted to bring the outdoors in while making the light well feel like an oasis rather than a forgotten corner. By layering broad-leaf tropical plants, cascading greens, and colorful accents, we achieved a lush environment that complements the home’s modern architecture. The planting palette was chosen to thrive in filtered light conditions, creating both drama and harmony in the space.

Installation Details: This vertical garden was installed using the Florafelt Pro Felt Planting System, a durable and sustainable framework that makes maintenance simple. Measuring 6 feet wide by 9 feet high, the wall provides enough scale to completely change the perception of the light well, turning it into a striking interior garden feature. Installed in January 2020, the wall has continued to flourish, adding value and daily enjoyment to the home.
